A Guide to the Perfect Weekend Attractions in Rotorua, New Zealand

Rotorua, New Zealand is the perfect destination for a weekend trip out of Auckland. If you’re looking for a relaxing weekend or a weekend full of fun activities and attractions, Rotorua has something for everyone!

Here are my favorite things to do in Rotorua:

Polynesian Spa A gorgeous spa with geothermal bathing pools, amazing massages, a cafe, and a shop to purchase Rotorua mud skincare products! The atmosphere in the geothermal pools was unbeatable! The temperatures varied from pool to pool and they were so relaxing. The spa overlooks the lake and makes for some amazing views! I also got a mud wrap and massage which was incredible. My day at the spa ended with a smoothie and some mud products to take home! The Polynesian Spa was the perfect way to relax and unwind. I would highly recommend it!polynesian_spa_geothermal_hot_springs_ciaofeliciapolynesian_spa_geothermal_hot_pools_rotorua_ciaofelicia

Kerosene Creek- This was the highlight of my trip to Rotorua! Kerosene Creek is a hot spring and waterfall tucked away in the forest that you can swim in.  It was surreal and felt like I was in a dream! There weren’t many people there and it was such a beautiful place to be.kerosene_creek_natural_hotsprings_waterfall_rotorua_ciaofelicia

Redwoods Treewalk A fun and unique way to see the Redwood Forest! Walk 12 meters above the ground on bridges connected to the trees to experience the giant trees up close! Make sure to check out the NightLights too! We went right before sunset so we got to experience the forest both during the day and when they were all lit up! Such a fun activity that’s perfect for the whole family!redwoods_tree_walk_rotorua_ciaofeliciaredwoods_treewalk_nightlights_attractions_ciaofelicia

Skyline Gondola & Luge A trip to Rotorua isn’t complete without trying the Luge! Riding downhill, racing your friends, and taking in all of those gorgeous views makes for a perfect afternoon! I had so much fun taking the gondola up to see a beautiful view of the city down below, and riding the luge for the first time! I definitely want to go back!skyline_rotorua_attractions_luge_ciaofeliciarotorua_luge_attractions_ciaofelicia

Baked Looking for the best treat in all of Rotorua?! Here it is! Baked is a must try bakery that specializes in donuts and cheesecake! Make sure to put it at the top of your must-visit list because before it opens, there is already a line at the door! But they are soo worth it. The donuts were to die for. We may or may not have ordered so many that we continued to eat donuts for the entire day. Best day ever.baked_bakery_and_cakery_donuts_rotorua_ciaofelicia

Terrace Kitchen We went here twice over 2 days! I loved their breakfast and couldn’t stop talking about it for half of the day. Super good food!terrace_kitchen_breakfast_rotorua_ciaofelicia

Wai-O-Tapu An active geothermal “wonderland” that is mesmerizing! It is a gorgeous walk through the area to see all of the steam and vivid colors. Wai-O-Tapu is so unique and is definitely a must-see!wai_o_tapu_champagne_pool_rotorua_ciaofelicia waiotapu_green_lake_rotorua_ciaofelicia

Hi! I’m Felicia. I am a 23 year old traveler originally from Huntington Beach, CA and currently living in Auckland, New Zealand. I graduated from California State University, Fullerton in May 2016. After graduation, I didn't have a "dream career" in mind, so I followed my heart and have been finding ways to make money as I travel the world ever since! I plan to travel and learn more about the world than I ever did in school. Traveling is a passion of mine. I love seeing the beauty of our world through architecture, nature, and people. I love connecting with people without being able to speak the same language. I love being in an unfamiliar place alone and stepping outside of my comfort zone. But I don’t know what I want to do yet. I plan to travel the world for as long as possible instead of "adulting." Until I figure it out, will you go on this adventure with me?

  1. Those are some really great recommendations. If I ever get down that way, I must do some of them; I especially liked the Kerosene Creek. There’s so many places I need to go!

  2. Sounds like a great place to visit!! The bridge through the redwoods looks like a nice walk. And the luge ride is something my son would love to do!

  3. Kerosene Creek looks incredible – waterfall AND hot spring in one? That’s too cool! The geothermal pools look like heaven as well, I’d love to check out some of those mud products.

  4. This is such a great post, especially as I have been dreaming to go to New Zealand for such a long time, and Rotua looks like a great place to start an NZ adventure. 🙂

The Polynesian Spa looks like my kind of place! I’ve never heard of Rotorua before, this is great to know about!

  6. This looks like a great way to spend a few days. Love the waterfall and any chance to go for a hike. It seems New Zealand is full of opportunities for this!

  7. Donuts and cheesecake are two of my favorite desserts!! Okay, I love all desserts, but those in that image look (almost) too cute and pretty to eat! & taking a dip in Kerosene Creek sounds lovely!
